ATTENTION: Proper Procedures for Monday's Solar Eclipse

Monday is not only our students' first day of school but it is also the day of a total solar eclipse viewable in the United States for the first time since 1979. Since this event occurs on the first day of school, there are not any formal activities planned. However, our library services will be providing each campus with a limited number of solar eclipse viewing glasses.
These viewers meet the ISO international safety standards for such products. Classes of students should not be taken out to view the eclipse without appropriate protective eyewear. Normal sunglasses DO NOT provide sufficient protection to prevent retinopathy which occurs when the solar eclipse is viewed with the unprotected eye. Teachers who would like to address the solar eclipse in their classroom can find a variety of activities provided by NASA at this site. Included at this site is a live stream of the event allowing safe viewing for everyone.
For safety reasons, the district recommends using the live stream to view the event for students who do not have access to solar eclipse viewing glasses that meet the ISO standards. To ensure the safety of all students, students will not be allowed outside between the hours of 12:15 to 2:15 without the approved protective viewing glasses.
